Kingdoms, damsels in distress, monsters, and badass warriors have always been a recipe for movie magic. This November the celebrated team from Mahal Empire bring the Horror-Nation their new take on old world lands of mystic horrors. With iconic names such as Daniel Baldwin, Eric Roberts, Angie Everhart, Kevin Sorbo, joining director Adam Werth, expectations will be high for this Game of Thrones style horror.
A creature named by locals as The Bone Devil is slaying its way through the Kingdom of Remeny. Desperate to protect his citizens, King Samuel dispenses an elite squad of his men to slay the beast. Shortly after, they come back in pieces. As a last resort before losing more of his fighting force, the King summons a legendary ragtag group of monster hunters known as The Lost Blades. The mercenaries quickly realize that they will be fighting a force from hell outside the gates of the castle, while an internal battle rumbles inside the tight court of the Kings. Monsters, both human and supernatural, rage through the realm. Who will survive, and how much of them will be left to tell the tale?
What sets the Mahal films apart from most independent films is their ability to make a modest budget look like a studio film and present layered plots. Any horror fan would be satisfied with a group of warriors wandering through the woods slaying monsters but the script from Victor Gelsomino and Werth himself keep the pace steady with political sub-plots that are posing a threat to the reign of the King. Family dynamics from both warriors and royalty are welcomed with added satire that add dramatic tones to the film. Top marks to the creature design team that present some new monsters for the horror hounds to drool over. The cast puts in professional performances with Sorbo standing out with a terrific physical and dramatic portrayal as captain guard of the King.
Joanna David does a tremendous job with the costume designs. Each setting takes the audience into the world of medieval attire with some tremendous crowns, dresses, and royal wardrobe. Devil’s Knight is certainly a medieval saga with swords and sorcery, but there is plenty of death and creature action to keep the horror fans satisfied. The Bone Devil descends from above looking like the bastard child of The Creeper and The Wishmaster.
Devil’s Knight is another gem in the ever-expanding ring of fantastic fright films from castle Mahal.
