Revenge films have been a popular sub-genre for horror fans since the early 70’s. From Last House On The Left to I Spit On Your Grave, audiences have cheered and celebrated vile characters getting their justice served in bloody fashion. Writer/Director Jame Dean latest film, Absolution, is a tale of vengeance, spurned from the violence that has plagued modern day America. Will Absolution bring fans a fresh take on this rehashed plot, or be just another rampage filled film with nothing new to offer?
A chance encounter throws an aging veteran into a mess of violence that has plagued an entire neighborhood. The Old Man (John Mefford) takes in a victim and begins to unravel the cause of the recent crime spree. Tired of watching innocent citizens being hurt, the old hero decides to take measures into his own hands. After reconnecting with a friend from the past, a new turf war begins between heroes and villains.

Absolution is a slow burn, dramatic take, that delves into the psyche of the criminal underground and those that have had enough of it. Mefford carries the narrative with force, making the viewer both empathize and cheer for The Old Man. Each performer puts in a solid shift as both villainous scum and fighting hero. Dean presents a clean film filled with rich dialogue that sets a somber tone. Absolution has enough action scenes to keep thrill seekers pleased as they await the gang member’s demise. Absolution is a very good revenge film that is heavy on sub-text while delivering a strong link between generations.
