Jennifer Nangle A.K.A. Malvolia, The Queen of Screams and an army of talented individuals bring the Horror Nation a new offering in the form of Body Count. While the title itself is not wholly original, the content contained therein is. Body Count is a female driven horror anthology that has it all, revenge, witches and a very Buffy vampire killer.
Body Count is the type of film that is the foundation for cult favorite streaming channel TUBI. The film is a perfect storm, as it contains the perfect mix of over acting and hitting the nail on the head when it comes to delivery. The practical effects in Body Count are neither mind-blowing nor are they subpar, serving the movie fairly enough.
The writing peaks and valleys throughout the run time of the film, providing the viewer with some fresh dialog that is easily quotable, and at other times the viewer is able to cite the dialog on screen even though it is the first time viewing it. The direction for each and every segment is on point, a major feat in the realm of independent film. The viewer can see that the filmmakers know their stuff.
The acting is decent enough throughout, Nangle delivers in every segment. One real stand out was Charles Chudabala. This man is so animated and has such a range that he could carry an entire film on his own.
There is a running story that lies in between segments where Nangle and three of her cronies hunt a group of people through a rural area. This reviewer would personally love to see this elaborated on. This, like most of the segments, could warrant a feature on its own.
Body Count stands out for a multitude of reasons, but what really stands out is the fact that the narrative is villain driven for the most part.
Films like this and others that show creativity and a love for the craft need to be brought to the forefront. The creators pour their hearts and souls into the work, not dollars and cents.
