In 2019, 5 million people worldwide were wiped out by a virus, with a further 5 million a day succumbing to death in 2022, thanks to a new strain. Then, three years later, a final germ advances, nicknamed MEANIES, turning survivors into mutant savages. Zorack, a survivor of the apocalypse who now lives a simple life, tells stories from a book leading to the end of the world…
The first tale, A Broken Promise, follows Rick—a shattered man on a quest driven by love and loss—as he treks across an empty land with his dog, Lucy, to fulfil a promise. The bleak atmosphere and sense of total isolation are well captured, as is the tension created by Rick when he encounters bandits along his route and searches seemingly empty buildings for food, water, and other supplies. A killer soundtrack supports the narrative, which runs for a total of 45 minutes, and concludes with a twist ending, tying proceedings up nicely.
With Rick’s troubles behind us, the gear in Doomsday Stories is taken up a notch, moving the audiences’ emotions from grief and sorrow to that of shock, horror, and a whole lot more, in Bomb Threats – the second offering in this collection. The tale, written and directed by Debbie D, who also stars, is a grim portrayal of the human condition and shows what could happen to good people in a collapsed society, where rules no longer apply.
Segment three of the anthology focuses on a guy called Frank, a lonely man living a sad existence in a lonelier world, who enters a government program when he cannot withstand the solitude any longer. When Frank, renamed 21, intercepts a message from his superiors, he sets off on a hunt in this quirky tale named The Forever Man.
In 187 Times, the fourth chapter in Doomsday Stories, the year is 2050, and James Kirk (not that one) is trying to find a way to save his wife and stop the virus, all thanks to a time-travelling suit he’s borrowed. 187 Times lightens the mood after what has gone before this offering, but still packs a great punch to end things.
All in all, this is a fun, funky, and low-budget production, offering something for everyone, with Bomb Threats and A Broken Promise as standouts. For those looking to snag a copy, you should check out the details below.
