Netflix is typically an overpriced streaming service that is overflowing with subpar content for the most part. Any one with any resemblance of a green thumb knows that the best things grow from fertilizer. Time Cut is one such example. The premise is not new, but by no means has it been over done……..yet.

Before I delve into the details, I would like to preface this with this film is not for everyone. Those of you that pretend that you are too good for any horror film that does not feature a family in turmoil moving into a house haunted by a ghost that is an allegory for family turmoil, those of you that get hard bitching about the films of Rob Zombie or if you are a neck beard elitist that has a seven hour analysis video on Heredity posted to your YouTube channel, skip the movie and this review.

If you have seen both Happy Death Day films, Totally Killer and maybe even had a fever dream after watching Back to the Future and I Know What You Did Last Summer back to back, you will love this movie.

Madison Bailey plays Lucy Fields, who travels back in time to stop her sister from being murdered in the early 2000’s. Lucy inadvertently travels through time, running the Marty McFly gambit of almost ripping apart the fabric of time as she tries to change the events of the past. During her time traveling excursion, Lucy discovers that her current time line parents used IVF to become pregnant with her as a means to replace her murdered sister Summer, (Antonia Gentry.)

The IVF plot point is pure brilliance, as without Summer’s passing, Lucy would cease to exist. This places the lead in a position that previous time travelers have not been in before. This genius of a plot device is nestled in the wrappings of what one would expect from a movie like this. The sound track and fashions scream 2004, somehow immersing the audience in the time period, but also pulling them out of the movie to a degree. While the backdrop can and should be a character in and of itself in a movie, having the soundtrack blasts Hilary Duff as the screen is filled with close up shots of Ugg boots can be a bit much.

This minor complaint aside, ignore what other reviewers are saying about this film and give it a view. Taken for what it is, Timecut could be a film that the viewer would be more than happy to revisit more than once.

Timecut is solid, receiving a 6.5 out of 10 from this critic.

Timecut is currently streaming on Netflix.
