Micheal Leo Centi delivers unto the horror nation an Easter basket filled to the brim with intentionally terrible special effects, dialogue, acting and cinematography. The film pays great homage to films that come from the Troma camp as well as slashers from the early 1980’s. And in the way marshmallow Peeps are not for everyone, the same can be said about the film Easter Holocaust.

The plot is nothing new to the genre. There is a killer creature on a rampage and the fate of the world falls into the hands of some unlikely heroes. Standing in the way of the group trying to stop the Easter Bunny from tearing out hearts and opening the gates to Hell are cannibalistic devil worshippers and a young girl with psychic powers.

As stated earlier, the lack of quality is intentional and the viewer knows what kind of film to expect. This is not Heredity or Midsommar. This is gritty, bare bones comedic horror.

The dialog, while delivered in cringe-worthy fashion by most of the cast, is still creative and even downright funny at times. The special effects are not very special and it works so well. Every prop used in the movie literally looks like it came off of the clearance rack of the local Spirit Halloween and that just adds to humor and the nostalgic feeling of watching a very old video nasty. By no stretch is this a smart horror film, unless you count some of the creative name calling found therein.

Films like Easter Holocaust are great additions to the horror genre. Films like this know where the genre came from and where it can go if artists are given creative freedom. Easter Holocaust is another in a long line of shoestring budget, creator funded and produced films that, if given an audience and a chance, would be a cult classic.

In closing, after the kids watch Hop for the third time, surrounded by candy wrappers, brightly colored plastic egg shells and the plastic grass that finds its way into everything, give Easter Holocaust a view. Uncle Lloyd would be proud.
