Typically, a movie review would start off with a synopsis of the plot or some behind the scenes facts or the like. This critic wants to start off this review by giving a huge shout out to the two components of this film that could easily turn into six pages of rambling gushing.
The first item is the acting. The cast is a brilliantly assembled group of actors that understand what type of film this is and they deliver the brilliantly written dialog in such a manner that screams fun, 1986 slasher movie. David Sheridan(Scary Movie’s Officer Doofy) chews through the scenes that he is in with such gusto that it left this reviewer clamoring for the actor to lead in more films. Flessia Rose,Sleepaway Camp’s Angela, plays the Camp Director and commands the attention of the viewer everytime she is on screen. The second item is the practical effects. These kills are gory and creative as well as exquisitely portrayed with brilliant effects and genius directling.
With that out of the way, I would like to focus on plot. The plot is straight forward slasher fare, but it is done so well, that the viewer still loses themselves in the story. In the current social climate, some of the exceptionally clever dialog that David Kerr committed to the page might trigger some, but it is eerily accurate to how people talked prior to the woke movement. That is their loss. If their delicate sensibilities prevent them from enjoying what is bound to be a cult classic, that’s on them. David Kerr writes and directs like a man displaced in time. Kerr’s film would be right at home on a video store shelf in the mid 1980’s. Bloody Summer Camp is the type of movie that would have been in this reviewer’s stack of rentals, nestled between a copy of Castlevania for the NES and House 2:The Second Story. Bloody Summer Camp is the type of movie that horror fans would constantly quote to one another on a regular basis.
