Take a ride into an alternate dimension of the land of the forgotten between psychosis and possession. A modern day tale of a Losers Club kind of feel with children as the protagonists instead of adults. At times it was like watching IT but instead a killer clown, a witch that takes kids to her lair only to eat them until they’re forgotten.

Egor, a young boy lives with his father, step mother, and baby sister in a high rise apartment in the outskirts of the city. He dreams of his dead mother coming back for him only to find that the Baba Yaga is channeling his dreams and has kidnapped his baby sister. Egor befriends Dasha and a bully named Anton. The three adolescents search for Egor’s missing sister that has abruptly been taken by the Baba Yaga. Each of the young teens experience their own hell in a death like afterlife only to find out that once the demon witch has taken you, you’re forgotten. The Baba Yaga takes a turn to a whole other place and a search for a baby becomes a life changing survival game and a race to end the old beldam’s curse.

Based on the Slavic folklore of the Baba Yaga, the witch that takes children. The Baba Yaga, an unseen one legged demon witch possesses the parents of the children and takes them away, cooks them, and eats them. The film takes a mythical scary creature and constructs it into human like which takes away some the thrill. The Baba Yaga takes the body of other humans in the form of her spawns; bird like child abductors. All though you really never actually see the demon witch in her true form she always seems to make her presence known at the right time. Hearing her one metal spiked leg stomping on the floor loud and angry as a woman scorned. At one point, the witch does somewhat show herself but it’s not the old hag, big wart nose, chilling witch we all remember from other horror films or fairy tales.

The sounds the unseen witch makes is similar to those of other ghostly films featuring demons or ghost possessions. At times it was almost like watching a James Wan film. The sounds, effects, music, and visuals were complementary to that of the insidious films. Baba Yaga is a modest modern Russian folklore tale that directors Svyatoslav Podgaevskiy and Nathalia Hencker really brought to life. Oleg Chugunov (Egor), Glafira Golubeva (Dasha), and Artyom Zhigulin (Anton) really were the strong points in this film. The young actors really prove that they were capable of such tremendous roles. All three were authentic and delightful to watch.

If you’re looking for gore and excitement, this isn’t the movie for you. This was also somewhat of a slow burn film and hard to keep attention. Eventually it picked up during the ending. Being it was a foreign film, the film was dubbed into English (which was a breath of fresh air) rather than having to watch the film and read subtitles. If you enjoy spine-chilling witchy fables then you will enjoy Baba Yaga, no doubt.
